Why Yoga Day Is Celebrated on 21st June?


Practicing yoga consists of medication and physical workout at the same time. It is beneficial for both mind and body. When you concentrate on doing a pose, it gives you both mind and body relaxation. Yoga is very necessary and beneficial for you if you practice on a daily basis.

The first signs of yoga studies are between 5000 and 1200 BC. The International Day of Yoga is celebrated every year on June 21 to raise global awareness about the benefits of the ancient Indian practice which is yoga. But why do we have a day of yoga? Why do people need to celebrate this day? How was this day determined and why is it celebrated? What will be the benefit of celebrating the yoga day in the parks collectively?

Even though the official name of this day is “UN International Yoga Day”, it is called as “Yoga Day” as well. It is celebrated by everyone who is practicing yoga around the world. It is all about yoga. People practice yoga, meditation, join debates about yoga, meet with different people, discuss yoga, participate in different cultural performances, and so on. 



India made the proposal to celebrate the International Yoga Day and declared its celebration on 21 June in 2014 by the United Nations General Assembly. As a result of the lobbying activities of the Prime Minister of India, it was decided to determine to celebrate such a day.

The United Nations General Assembly was celebrated for the first time in 2015 worldwide, with 177 member states and the majority of them being accepted by joint sponsors. India recommended the celebration of June 21 as Yoga Day and 175 member states approved it. In order to celebrate this historic day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi practiced yoga in New Delhi with 35,000 people.

In his speech to the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi demanded that June 21 be declared World Yoga Day and said, “Yoga is the gift of India’s ancient traditions to humanity. Yoga, which is also the symbol of harmony between man and nature, enables people to discover unity within themselves, in nature and in the world. It symbolizes the unity of mind and body, thought and action, and fulfillment with intent. We can overcome problems such as climate change by changing our lifestyles and by making people conscious.” The United Nations accepted Modi’s proposal on 11 December 2014 and declared June 21 as World Yoga Day.

On June 21st, thousands of people, especially in India, are organizing activities in squares, parks, and studios to make efforts to spread yoga teaching. World Yoga Day is also celebrated in other countries. Yoga activities will be held in 251 cities on six continents. It is observed on 21st June every year to spread awareness about the importance and effects of yoga on the health of the people. Modi, who does yoga with 40,000 people in the Prabhat Tara area, said that they are working to make yoga a pillar of preventive health services. He said that efforts should be made to do yoga from cities to villages.



In his speech to the United Nations, Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi aimed the purpose of Yoga Day; “Yoga is an invaluable ancient tradition of India. It is a sacred approach that brings the state of health and well-being that embodies the unity of mind and body, the unity of thought and movement, and the harmony of humanity and nature. Yoga is not just about exercising. Yoga is a teaching that allows you to explore being with nature, the world and yourself. We can achieve good by changing your lifestyle and creating awareness.”

At the basic level, aim is to show world health and well-being are priorities. 



Why 21st of June is Chosen to Celebrate International Day of Yoga?


21 June has worldwide importance. It affects the angle of sunlight coming into the world. It changes the situation of day and night in the world. This is a summer solstice day of North and winter solstice days  Of South. During the June Solstice, the North Pole leans towards the Sun, or we can say when the sun starts moving from north to south. This date in the Northern Hemisphere is the longest day of the year. It has an advantage for people on the North’s pole, it is accepted as the beginning of the summer.

From Yoga’s perspective, first of all, 21 June is the day to pay homage to the Sadgurus. And, this time is the transition period. For example, time for meditation, time for decision making, time for making a big change in your life, and so on.

Around these times, the Adiyogi , the first yogi, left towards the south. And, the first thing he saw was the 7 royal sages. These sages became his first students. Those students, after years, created the base of yoga. Thye propagated yoga as a science all over the world.

Modi, who proposed to celebrate Yoga Day, explained why he proposed June 21 and stressed its importance as follows: “This is the longest day in the North Pole and is of great importance in many parts of the world. In terms of yoga, this date passes to Dakshinayana, the summer solstice, and in the first full moon after the summer solstice, it is said that Shiva (the first yogi) began to spread the teaching of yoga to the world and became the first Guru (teacher, master). It is also said that in summertime nature supports us for spiritual practices.”

Themes of International Day of Yoga


Every year, people celebrate The International Day of Yoga on June 21. The aim of this day is to raise global awareness about the benefits of the ancient Indian practice which is yoga. It comes with a different theme every year.



On 21 June 2015, the first International Day of Yoga celebrated all over the world but the most know one was in New Delhi, India. The Indian Prime Minister accompanied the Yeni Delhi people to celebrate this day and practiced yoga together. They practiced yoga for 35 minutes. They broke a record and their names are now in Guinness World Records. Their names are mentioned 2 times; the largest yoga class and the largest number of nationalities from 84 countries participated.

On 21 June 2016, it is celebrated under the name of “The National Event of Mass Yoga Demonstration”, at Chandigarh.

On 21 June 2017, people who practicing yoga created a new world record. Around 51,000 people from around 150 countries participated in the day to celebrate in Uttar Pradesh. That’s how they broke the record, with numbers.

On 21 June 2018 in Uttarakhand, Prime Minister accompanied around 55,000 yoga lovers to practice yoga together.

What Easy Yoga Poses Can You Try out for the International Day of Yoga?


Downward dog: Stand on your hands and knees. Your knees should be directly in line with your hips. Place it directly under. Exhale to lift your tailbone up and back. Meanwhile, let your knees have a slight twist. Press down to the mat with your heels. Let your head be heavy and send your palms into the mat. Breathe deep into the backline.

Child’s pose: Whether for practicing yoga or not, this pose is very useful for your muscles to relax and stretch. Kneel down and align your toes together.
