Why Yoga Is Bad: The Potential Harms of Yoga

The movements made according to the types of yoga have a certain degree of difficulty and rhythm. The physical capacity and strength of a beginner or person with certain health problems and a person who has been practicing yoga for a long time differ. Your body gives you the clue to which movement you can progress. You should not feel pain in any movement. But when you do some movements wrong, you may feel pain or even get injured. In other words, as in any sports branch, yoga is also bad in certain situations.

If you try to do a move you need to develop gradually swiftly, you may be injured. In addition, if you have a chronic illness, your doctor may not recommend doing yoga to you. In this case, yoga is bad for you. Apart from that, practicing yoga without a trainer usually has bad results because you are more likely to practice the movements incorrectly. Finally, you shouldn’t strain yourself doing yoga. Forcing your body can affect you badly.

The Harms Related to Yoga: Why It Is Bad

Yoga asana is only the third of the 8 branches of yoga. These 8 branches are imagined by the branches of a tree. Yamas are the universal ethical rules; Niyamas are ethical rules applied personally; Asana posture, sitting; Pranayama breath control; Pratyahara sense orientation; Dharana concentration; Dhyana is meditation and Samadhi is divine bliss. The practice of asana mentioned in Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is very different from the practice of asana performed today. Our topic is about the practice of yoga asana today. As it is known, many postures we call yoga today are repeated at regular intervals. If you regularly attend yoga classes, for example, Adho Mukha Svanasana (dog facing down) is a pose repeated at least 2 times in almost every yoga class, in some yoga variants this number may be higher. These numbers are similar for all other yoga postures; Sometimes staying in asana for a long time, sometimes just an intermediate transition.

If a student who has been practicing yoga asana for 10 years does 300 Adho Mukha Svanasana (AMS) per year (approximately), this means 3000 AMS in 10 years! This number can sometimes be more. If repeated poses are made wrong without knowing your body level, respecting the capacity of the body, and not understanding the body, it will lead to a hundred percent injury in at least 5 years. Yoga asana is a work that challenges the body’s alignment. It is almost against the nature of the body; Do we make Trikonasana or Purvottanasana in our daily life, for example? Yoga asana offers an ideal and safe oasis to remove the body and mind from the comfort zone. To take advantage of the blessings this oasis offers us, it is necessary to know the body. You may need the guidance of an experienced teacher who you feel safe to recognize the body.

Physical Harms of Yoga

Most of the people who live their lives with the formats of their bodies in their daily lives are aware that they have a body, but the body is not aware of posture-alignment-structure disorders. People who remember the body only when it hurts and have to spend most of their lives sitting down are purified from the stress they have been exposed to during their day in yoga classes – with a simple generalization, of course, there are many who come for different reasons. Since the marketing of yoga lessons is given with the theme of a ‘fetish of happiness’, the majority of the lessons are not corrected for body alignment, since there is no seismic change in the person’s body awareness of the yoga asana, the body is rather vulnerable to our unconscious forms – especially against our own unconsciousness. You don’t feel good after every yoga class, every yoga class may not open a place in your body, every yoga class may not be good because it can be very painful to face yourself.

Yoga asana offers a series of lessons, and during making these series hips that are out of alignment can cause knees and neck hernia to be injured, upside-down postures made with the wrong technique can cause extremely serious nerve compression and spinal deformation, and some asana series practiced without warming up may cause hamstring injuries. If you look at the world of yoga, you may have heard that many yoga teachers get a hip replacement in the second spring of their lives. It is common for knee problems (hyper-flexible knees especially) to increase or deepen after the yoga class. Stretches that the knees are exposed to during yoga asana can damage both the patella and the connective tissues around it, why? Since many people cannot master the hamstring muscles, the knee pushes back and stays in poses, pushing the knee back while the upper legs are not working leads to menus and ligament problems. Or if the inelastic knees stop at the wand without using the hamstring muscle, the knee may be damaged. Injury is inevitable if yoga asana is performed using only the flexibility of the bone, without realizing the body.

Pain/weight/synovial fluid accumulation or decrease in the hips causes disability if done outside the level of the hip. The neck is a region of injury for someone who does not understand how to use his body during yoga movements. Yoga asana is an education that needs to be done by discovering the muscle strength and flexibility in the body, and if you do it without knowing your body, it has the potential to disable you, and the culprit of this is not yoga asana! This has nothing to do with karma. Yoga asana, if we allow it, warns and awakens us against the “posture disorders” we have created without realizing our body since we were born. Niyamas targeting self-discipline are divided into five as Saucha (cleanliness, clarity), Santosha (satisfaction), Tapas (discipline and dedication), Svadhyaya (discovery for self-awareness), Ishvara Pranidhana (surrender). By bringing this important five to every asana, we can get rid of the injury and use the body and self to explore the inner world.

Mental Harms of Yoga

When we enter the asana, do we look at ourselves honestly and impartially? Are we angry with the teacher who warned us in an asana? Is our approach to asana, or is our asana ‘clean’ (‘Saucha’)? Or do we find ourselves comparing with others? Do we stretch our own bodies while doing asana? Or are we not stretching enough? Does Asana feed the ego on the mind’s consequences? For example, a student who says he has a neck hernia may persistently want to stand upside down on one hand, but this will damage the neck. This approach is already a cause of injury alone. The first and most important Yama ‘ahimsa’ (nonviolence) should come into play here – if a person is harming himself because he loves it, the teacher should not allow it. Because whatever you do on the mat, you do it in your life. If you cannot pay attention to yourself, how will you offer the student a safe space?

When we say “Santosha” asana, are we happy with our situation? Should we be satisfied? Are we doing an asana by compressing your body / sacrificing the body for asana, or are we proud of it? There is no pride place in yoga asana. Satisfaction here is the breath, moment, and body satisfaction you have, satisfaction is the result of actions that are made by keeping the body clean like a temple. As in the example above, asana made with ego and greed has no use. Its harm is many. Is the ‘tapas’ discipline in mind on the mat? Why work disciplined and learn the body? Discipline and dedication are equivalent to an art. Everything handled without discipline, diligence and dedication promise short-term satisfaction; If yoga asana is going into your daily life, you should experience it with discipline on your own, so that you can recognize your mind, body, and breath. Let the lessons guide you. If yoga will turn into meditation, it should be done heartily and honestly with discipline and awareness.

‘Svadhyaya’ (self-learning) has an even more complex meaning in the Sanskrit language: reading Vedic and other sacred texts and learning their own self by reading. This can be applied to any asana, any behavior. You can observe the movements of the mind and do mindfulness, look at the body’s level and learn what and how to do during asana, explore the boundaries of the body, and the vastness of the mind. Nowadays, many people who have become yoga instructors go from one training to another but are looking for acumen in an uninformed pool of knowledge. The student can train 200/300/500 hours + therapy + whatever else without understanding the need of his own body, but it should not be forgotten that these types of training do not benefit a student who does not practice his own practice regularly. With the benefits of body-mind-spirit, “moksha” is an ore of yoga and yoga asana for achieving freedom, health-inner peace, and breath control. If we apply this ore with respect to the body instead of bending it with ego ‘ahamkara’, we can open up to an endless universe.

Is It Dangerous to Practice Yoga?

With an article published in The NY Times, one of the leading publications of the world press, the yoga community has been displaced. “How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body?” The article entitled WILLIAM J. BROAD, who wrote science articles. In summary, the article mentions that even if it is done safely and carefully, yoga will definitely cause damage to the body one day. There are a few cases of hurt with yoga, undergoing surgeries, paralysis, and unable to walk. It is written in such a messenger of language that I am entitled to read it even when I have been practicing yoga for years, teaching, and living the benefits of yoga deeply. I thought about my waist, which I slowly injured my body with the shoulder postures, when I had not been able to pull myself up yet at the times I first started yoga, or the damage caused by a single yoga session on my knees a few years ago and the pain that did not pass for weeks.

Many articles and videos have been published in the world against this article of The NY Times. Almost all argued justified arguments; It has been described beautifully that yoga with ego and greed or without self-knowledge has the possibility to hurt like every “sport”. Having agreed with all of them, I thought of the article in another way, why the article was written, and now published on a trusted media channel like the NY Times (supposedly). Because when I searched a little, I saw that the articles in this aspect are not the first and only. From time to time, anti-yoga articles are published in the media, such as the spokesperson of the authority such as The NY Times, BBC News, and Observer. While most say that you need to work with a qualified instructor (of course), yoga doesn’t work as an exercise alone (depending on what you expect from this exercise), almost none of them mentions that yoga injuries can be caused by ambition and ego. It is described as if yoga has more harm than good. While injuries are considered reasonable in “accepted” sports such as tennis and running, yoga injuries, which are extremely low in proportion, are shown with fingers immediately. Apart from the misuse of yoga in the sports category, the dangers for the system are now understood as it is a discipline that provides mind-body-spirit integrity.

Yoga, which is relatively new in Europe, has been practiced in America for many years. Like there are almost no people in New York and on the west coast (pacific coast) who did not practice yoga or tried or thought of trying. Most people consider yoga as something they will try one day, even if they never did. To date, yoga has been a preferred thing for the continuity of the system. What does the system want? Let it work, work hard and do it without complaints, have fun to the extent allowed, return to your home, watch television and then work again, spend the money you earned and give it back to the system… That’s how capitalism works. Even though they borrowed with a bank loan and bought their house, and managed to get their children to be taught in a private school, the masses experience what their soul requires or money, not the natural one. With the lie that capitalism makes everything possible, people give a scoop of what they earn with a teaspoon.

Karl Marx explained beautifully how capitalism worked in his time. Personally, I learned what this flawless system is from a bit of sociology education, some of the big companies I’ve been dealing with for years, a little from Baudrillard, but most in a few days in London. As you know, London, which is like the bastion of capitalism, has been organized so that when you cross it, you will even know when to look to the right and to the left with arrows drawn on the ground. The system even tells you how to listen to your music, what to do in your spare time, and how to throw your feet off the subway. Mind the Gap (watch out for the gap) warning in the subway says, “I have set up a great system and the only mistake in this system is the 10-centimeter gap between this train and the station, watch out, don’t fall,”. In the evening, the pubs overflow.

What Is Bad: Yoga or Capitalizm?

While the clubs where you can easily find chemical drugs fill up wildly at the weekend, it is clear how many times you will go to that club, what to do inside, how and when you will return home with the super regular public transportation system. The system says: go to work now, get out now, go to the pub, drink so much, watch the match, go home, have a queue at the door, but wait to enter that club, take the pills of happiness we distribute inside, the last bus leaves soon if you don’t go home You stay on the street, go to work, work, work, and consume to keep your mind embraced with chemicals or alcohol or television. This is not only in London, of course, but it can also be seen very clearly there. (If we adapt the orders of the system to our country, the lines do not differ much, the content is the same: go to work, love when it comes to Friday but remember, it will be Monday again, give half of the salary to warm up, make a child and career too, send your child to a private school, get a bank loan and work for years to pay, keep the TV always on, watch the series, wear from certain places, etc.

Until now, yoga has been a great tool for the functioning of this system. It seemed like a false door of hope for people who lived with certain stresses in life, which played with certain roles such as a theater scene, which increased the capacity of acceptance in humans. It was good for the spine that collapsed at the computer, and the minds were comfortable. Thus, it became easier to go to work on Monday, and the yoga’s philosophy of “everything is as it should be” turned into an understanding of “what should we do, life is like this”. Slave minds accustomed to consuming were now beginning to enrich the yoga economy; crazy money was spent on organic markets, yoga clothes and products, and studios where famous teachers teach.

But something unexpected started to happen. As I said, yoga practice in America is even more intense than in India. California is where the hippie movement of the 68’s started, you know. Believe it or not, now a spiritual movement has begun. Yoga is not only referred to as an exercise, it is practiced more consciously. Yes, yoga as a sector is still very rich, but besides something else has happened. As Shiva Rea voiced in an interview in an amazing way, shakti energy is now awakening in people who have been practicing yoga for whatever reason and practicing it for years.

What happens when the creative life energy (ie Shakti) awakens? For years, the pineal gland, which is numb with fluoride, begins to wake up, people see the functioning of the system, and question what they think is real. Moreover; People get less sick: the drug market, the world’s most earning industry, is in a panic! Eating healthy is gaining importance: Mc Donalds is already finished, KFC is not being consumed in courts, Coca Cola, cigarette companies are already working only in underdeveloped countries! The church has already been questioned, authoritarian religion working with the punishment system cannot pass the word, it was understood that God spoke of reward, not punishment. Borders have been lifted, a common consciousness has begun to develop in all countries, from underdeveloped to more developed.

Yoga does not do much to the system anymore, it poses danger. Therefore, anti-yoga propaganda starts thinly. Yoga, which has continued its operation until today, is swept under the carpet by the leading system spokesman media. I think this delicacy will continue until we find a new toy that they can put in place, then larger bans, applications will emerge. So the western world is in a panic! Prozac society has found a spiritual way out, stop it! This subtle anti-yoga approach makes me happy, so we’re on the right track. The path we have found, first against our own ego, and then against the great capitalist ego, is obviously sound. This road is wider and more hazardous than the gap between the train and the station. Mind the gap but don’t be afraid, even if you fall, you are embraced by a great common consciousness. Then continue on the road!

Science Explains Why Yoga Is Bad

Meditation and yoga are known as an activity performed by many people worldwide, adding positive value to life, and playing an important role in personal development. However, meditation, known to play a supportive role in the treatment of relaxation and many diseases, proved to cause mania, depression, hallucination, and psychosis in clinical studies conducted in the USA and UK. It turned out that 60 percent of people who turn to meditation therapy in the U.S. have at least one side effect. Depression and mental blurring are among these side effects.

In a statement to the press by Miguel Farias from Coventry University and researcher Catherine Wikholm from the clinical psychology department of Surrey University; It was stated that 1 of every 14 people examined within the scope of the said research had these side effects. Dr. Farias describes these side effects as “scandal” in an interview with The Times. In England, the research that measured the effects of yoga and meditation on people was done on prisoners and published in a scientific book named “The Buddha Pill: Can meditation change you?”.

In a study conducted in prisons in different parts of the country, prisoners were made to work for 90 minutes each and were checked after 10 weeks. It was observed that the stress and distress of the prisoners decreased, but the aggressive behavior did not decrease and even some of them increased. Speaking to The Times, Ms. Wikholm stated that the stack of information shared in the media for yoga and meditation could mislead people and warned everyone that activities could have bad side effects.

On the other hand, an article published recently in The Lancet, which contains scientific articles, argues that meditation can prevent modern drugs to overcome depression. As a result, research on yoga and meditation that divides researchers into two reveals that these subjects should be treated consciously.

Why Hot Yoga Is Bad?

There are many so-called types of Yoga that are common today. The reasons for the formation of these so-called Yoga types are that they do the missionary work of various Far Eastern religions under the name of Yoga. The Original Yoga System, which is true Yoga, has no relationship with religion, culture, and society, and even its written sources are older than the oldest religion.

In this so-called yoga type (i.e. in hot yoga), yoga postures are practiced in a closed place where the room is heated above 40 degrees. It is claimed that the application of these postures in a warm environment is very beneficial for the body. Just as it is unreasonable to do gymnastics in a sauna by starting with plain logic, it is also unreasonable to practice Yoga postures in such a closed and 40 degree heated room. In addition, Yoga postures are made in their original form. These movements are extremely harmful to general health.

People who practice yoga in rooms heated at 40-50 degrees are also recommended to drink plenty of water. Thus, they sweat more. However, in the original Yoga texts, it is recommended that the Yoga exercises be done in a cool room, not in the heat. Also, nothing should be eaten and drunk during Yoga exercises. During yoga exercises, the body warms up naturally and sweats, normally this helps. However, there is no benefit in sweating by heating the body artificially.

When the body temperature that is rising during exercise is increased by increasing the ambient temperature, the body temperature balancing mechanism is disrupted. Although our body can tolerate 10 degrees of heat loss, it cannot withstand more than 5 degrees of heat increase. The hyperthermia of 70 athletes, that is, they died from high temperature, reveals the importance of this issue. If so-called Yoga exercises are carried out in such a warm room, an enlargement of the skin vessels occurs to keep the body temperature constant. Blood is deposited in the skin and subcutaneous region. The condition called “hypovolemia” occurs as a result of both blood slipping into this area and fluid loss from the sweat glands.

That means a significant reduction in the amount of blood that goes to vital internal organs and the brain occurs. Both the working muscles and the skin trying to lower the body temperature try to get a big share of the blood pumped by the heart. Thus, our cardiovascular system, which is in a dead-end, increases the heart rate even more. The heart is forced too hard, even in people without heart disease, life threats can arise. In hot exercises, metabolic residues such as lactic acid accumulate earlier and more in the body, and early fatigue occurs.

Electrolyte imbalance occurs due to both lactic acid accumulation and fluid loss, and pain and cramps occur in the muscles. Those who recommend doing yoga at 40 degrees claim that the blood that is filled with oxygen in this way will circulate throughout the body and all organs will be renewed. However, as scientifically mentioned above, blood cannot circulate because it accumulates in the muscles and skin, and the functions of the heart and other vital organs are compromised. This method, which can already be fatal for people with cardiovascular diseases, can even endanger the lives of healthy people. The person who describes this so-called yoga also states that with this method, the blood will thin and will clean the circulatory system. However, on the contrary, the fluidity of the blood will decrease due to fluid loss at high temperatures, moreover, the blood flow will slow down due to the expansion in the blood vessels.

Only the written sources of the Original Yoga System date back to 10,000 years ago. It is such a perfect system that the person who applies it regularly gets perfect health. Unfortunately, some people do different exercises under the name of Yoga. Undeveloped people try to add something from him saying that I am developing this perfect system and play with the health of everyone. A lot of attention is required to the so-called Yoga types to protect both physical and mental health.
